Sheltered housing shines!
Two of South Essex Homes sheltered housing schemes have been awarded national awards. Great Mead, located in Shoebury and Nicholson House, located in Southend were both finalists in the EAC (Elderly Accommodation Council) Housing for Older People Awards 2010.
The awards, supported by the Department for Communities and Local Government, are a chance to publicly celebrate the best specialist housing providers for older people and are open to retirement housing, sheltered housing, assisted living and extra care housing. South Essex Homes had been nominated by its residents which involved a consultation exercise that captured their satisfaction about the services that are provided and their and fellow residents well being.
The awards took place at a special ceremony held in London in early February, where residents and officers from the attended.
Phil Lyons, Chair of the Board, said:
“To win two awards on the basis of residents themselves nominating us, is a real endorsement of what our sheltered scheme tenants think about South Essex Homes.
I am really proud of the services we provide to residents.
Living in sheltered accommodation does not mean that you have to live a sheltered life and there are a range of social activities always taking place from karaoke to keep fit.
As there were over 500 entries it was great to gain two awards. However, I think the most important message this gives us is that our sheltered schemes are places where people are happy and proud to live.”
South Essex Homes schemes were two of 32 finalists, selected by 3 different judges. Nicholson House was awarded a gold prize along with a £250 cheque to be spent on community projects, Great Mead was also awarded a silver prize.
