South Essex Homes completes fire door safety checks

A tender to carry out works on fire doors across the Borough will be published next week.
As part of an ongoing fire door maintenance programme, our team of in-house trained technicians are regularly looking at the condition of communal fire doors at Southend-on-Sea’s tower blocks.
The survey has involved thorough checks of each and every fire door within communal areas of the 13 high rise blocks managed by South Essex Homes on behalf of Southend-on-Sea Borough Council.
Sarah Lander, Assistant Director of Operations at South Essex Homes, said: “Our team have identified through the survey that the doors themselves were all in good working order. However some of the thresholds need to have work completed in order to level the floor and/or reduce the gap underneath the doors.
“Following a successful pilot in two tower blocks (Quantock and Chiltern), we are now tendering for a contractor to complete these works to ensure every fire door across all 13 tower blocks is fitted to a level floor surface with a gap of 10mm or less between the door and the floor.”
The tender will be published week commencing 1st July 2019.
Councillor Ian Gilbert, Leader of the Council, says: “Fire safety is a priority for this council and we know that it is also important to local people and South Essex Homes tenants. Whilst the council has invested millions of pounds to complete fire safety works on numerous council housing blocks and other council property, I am also pleased to see that South Essex Homes have carried out this review of communal fire doors and will be addressing floor levels and thresholds through this tender.”
