Temporary Accommodation Service

South Essex Homes manages ten temporary accommodation buildings (previously known as hostels) in the borough of Southend with a total number of 91 available rooms.  There are also 22 additional rooms available to provide refuge to people fleeing abusive relationships.

Places in temporary accommodation are allocated following referral from Southend Borough Council, CM16+ and YOS, for a range of reasons including; homelessness, mental health issues, drug and alcohol abuse, rough sleeping, youth offending and young people leaving care.

Each temporary accommodation building has a communal lounge which contains a computer for residents to use to bid for properties and access to Housing Benefit claims.  Temporary Accommodation Officers ensure the facilitation of each building and work with partner agencies to provide individual support.

We also employ a Supported Housing Services Officer specifically to help those residents with Mental Health, Drug and Alcohol issues.

Food donations in low supply

The Temporary Accommodation Service provides temporary and emergency accommodation to homeless families and single people.  Sometimes they have no money and no food.  We like to keep a stock of some basic foods to give out to people coming into the hostel in a crisis, sometimes during the night or at the weekend.

We would appreciate any donations from members of the public so we can continue to offer help in this way.  We would especially like to receive:

  • Tea, coffee, sugar, long-life milk or powdered milk, pasta, rice, tinned potatoes, baked beans, soups, tinned meats, tuna, vegetarian options.
  • Also toiletries e.g. soap, shampoo, shower gel, toothpaste and brushes.
  • Baby items e.g. nappies, bottles, baby milk, baby food.

If you can help now or on a regular basis it would be much appreciated.

Please contact the Temporary Accommodation Service for more information on 01702 212730. Please take any donations to the office at 216 Southchurch Road (opposite Nicholson House) or contact the team and we will arrange to collect.

Many thanks indeed.
